What is the World Markets?
The World Markets, or the Big Five, are of course the most prominent of all the world markets that make up what is known as the New York Stock Exchange. They are considered to be the “world’s biggest and best malls”, where investors flock from all over the world to buy shares in the company that they believe will perform well. The most well-known of these is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which rises and falls based on a variety of global economic reports each day. You will find that the New York Stock Exchange often has news that affects many other markets around the world, so it is a daily event that affects not only the companies’ shares but the currency prices, interest rates, and more.
This past February was the beginning of the trading season for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and although it didn’t do as well as expected, the World Markets still played host to many other interesting events and trends. First off, the Chinese market was affected by the slowing economy there, and the Chinese government issued several warnings about how their economy would affect the global economy in general. Forex watchers expected that the Chinese government would hike their interest rates in an effort to stimulate the economy and get it growing again. As of now, the Chinese government has yet to raise their interest rates, and it is unknown whether this is a wise move or not.
Also, the European markets were affected by the slowing economy in Europe itself, and many traders saw the beginning of a possible end to the euro as well. The European economy, although healthy overall, is suffering from a number of negative factors, including the constant threat of a Greek exit from the European Union. The World Markets play host to many different political and financial events, and they help define the direction of the economies of the world. The Chinese and European economies are the most obvious examples of the power of the World Markets, and they help determine the state of the global economy almost daily.
