Act Now on Climate Change
Dr Phil McFadden FAA
I have spent my professional career as a research geophysicist and clearly the most urgent and pressing problem we face today is that of climate change.
The real debate about climate change now centres on the details of just how much the temperature will rise and what the precise consequences of that temperature rise will be. This is a complex problem and it is enormously difficult to make precise predictions. However, we can be certain about the general predictions of rising global temperature, system tipping-points, and dangerous climate change, as a result of human-produced emissions of carbon dioxide.
We are already committed to a substantial temperature rise but it remains possible to avoid dangerous climate change if we act now. This is good news because it means that we know what the basic problem is and that we can act to reduce the problem to the point where the consequences are manageable.
As responsible people concerned about the legacy we will leave to our children there is a clear obligation to reduce climate change. But the message from the science is clear - we must act now. Delays will increase the difficulty and substantially increase the cost. If we do nothing, soon we will no longer be able to avoid dangerous climate change.
When talking with others it became clear that, like me, many people and businesses feel the need to do something meaningful but simply do not know how. That is why we have created Climakind.
Climakind provides a simple, transparent method for reducing global carbon emissions immediately and securely. By this I mean that if you purchase carbon dioxide through Climakind you can be certain that that amount of carbon dioxide will never reach the atmosphere. This is unlike many offset programs where you always have to be concerned about the centuries-long management of the program in order to ensure permanence. At the same time, purchasing from Climakind allows you to have a more meaningful impact by applying pressure for business and industry globally to be innovative in developing low-carbon solutions for the infrastructure and products they create.
Each of us needs to act now in order to help stop dangerous climate change. We have to act not only in terms of changing our own personal behaviours, but also to apply pressure to others for much lower carbon solutions. So, with regard to carbon emissions, do your best, Climakind the rest.
